Describing Diet of Imperiled Sierra Nevada Red Foxes and a Carnivoran Competitor Using DNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
Montane red foxes (Vulpes vulpes ssp.) native to western North America are of broad conservation interest, but their ecology is poorly understood due to their rarity. We examined the diet of the Sierra Nevada red fox (V. v. necator) in an unstudied portion of their range in Oregon, USA, then evaluated dietary overlap between red fox and coyote (Canis ...

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária, 2018
The larvae of the family Trombiculidae are ectoparasites of vertebrates, including birds. The bite of some species can cause deep lesions and severe skin reactions in the host, these can lead to dermatitis, popularly known as trombiculiasis.

Unveiling Clutch Investment Strategies in Birds: A Case Study on Great Tits Using Generalized Additive Models

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
Reproductive investment in eggs can be made egalitarian or unevenly distributed within clutches. We investigated the pattern of investment in great tits (Parus major) from a Spanish population using generalized additive mixed‐effects models. Our results indicate that females consistently invest less in the first eggs.

Responsiveness to photostimulation in two passeriform birds

open access: yesEnvironment Conservation Journal, 2011
Two studies were performed to analyze the photoperiodic interaction of testicular growth in brahminy myna and weaver bird. In the first study, birds were exposed to stimulatory long day lengths (15L:9D) and natural day length (NDL) for 60 days. The second study investigated the interpretation of a light pulse as ‘morning (entraining)’ or ‘evening ...

Karyotypes of four bird species of the order Passeriformes [PDF]

open access: yesHereditas, 2009
The karyotypes of four bird species in the order Passeriformes have been studied. The results further confirm that in birds, the karyotypes of closely related species are only slightly different.
