1974The passions, kleśa in Sanskrit, fan-nao Open image in new window in Chinese, non-moṅs-pa in Tibetan, are torments, defilements of the mind, by virtue of which actions (karman) ‘accumulate’ (upacayaṃ gacchanti), that is, they gather force and fruitfulness and necessarily produce a retribution, notably a new existence in the world of painful rebirth1.
