Effect of Carbon Concentration on the Sputtering of Carbon-Rich SiC Bombarded by Helium Ions

open access: yesComputation, 2018
Silicon carbide (SiC) is considered as an important material for nuclear engineering due to its excellent properties. Changing the carbon content in SiC can regulate and control its elastic and thermodynamic properties, but a simulation study of the ...

On active and passive testing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Given a property of Boolean functions, what is the minimum number of queries required to determine with high probability if an input function satisfies this property or is "far" from satisfying it?

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Adaptive hope: a process for social environmental change

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2023
Future threats and ever-present uncertainty have become part of our social ecological reality. We need hope to respond to social ecological change, and our sense of hope must adapt to the changes we experience.

Efficacy of Continuous Passive Motion after Total Knee Arthroplasty in Veteran Patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Since the early 1980s, continuous passive motion has been used as adjunct therapy in patients’ rehabilitation following total knee arthroplasty. Although existing literature challenged the benefits of continuous passive motion claiming it had no added ...

Testing the Feasibility of a Passive and Active Case Ascertainment System for Multiple Rare Conditions Simultaneously: The Experience in Three US States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Owing to their low prevalence, single rare conditions are difficult to monitor through current state passive and active case ascertainment systems.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Dynamics of Passive-Scalar Turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We present the first study of the dynamic scaling or multiscaling of passive-scalar and passive-vector turbulence. For the Kraichnan version of passive-scalar and passive-vector turbulence we show analytically, in both Eulerian and quasi-Lagrangian ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

474: lighting and thermal performance of innovative shading devices: new insights into their aesthetics and control in a Mediterranean climate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
With a view towards minimising energy demand for cooling and artificial lighting in buildings, this paper evaluates innovative shading devices and how they can balance a generous degree of control mastering seasonal natural light with thermal gains in a ...
