Visions, Values, and Videos: Revisiting Envisionings in Service of UbiComp Design for the Home [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
UbiComp has been envisioned to bring about a future dominated by calm computing technologies making our everyday lives ever more convenient. Yet the same vision has also attracted criticism for encouraging a solitary and passive lifestyle.

Modular Transformerless Static Synchronous Series Compensator with Self-Balancing for Ultra High Current Using a Paralleling Scheme

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
A novel modular Transformerless, Self-balanced, Static Synchronous Series Compensator (TSB-SSSC) capable of delivering ultra-high current, with the objective of dynamically balancing the impedance of the transmission power grid, is proposed.

Adaptive Balancing of Robots and Mechatronic Systems

open access: yesRobotics, 2018
Present paper is dealing with the adaptive static balancing of robot or other mechatronic arms that are rocking in vertical plane and whose static loads are variable, by using counterweights and springs.

Passive Gravity Balancing with a Self-Regulating Mechanism for Variable Payload

open access: yesMachines, 2021
Gravity balancing techniques allow for the reduction of energy consumptions in robotic systems. With the appropriate arrangements, often including springs, the overall potential energy of a manipulator can be made configuration-independent, achieving an ...

Passive motion reduces vestibular balance and perceptual responses [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 2015
Key points Human activity exposes the vestibular organs to a wide dynamic range of motion. We aimed to discover whether the CNS regulates sensitivity to vestibular afference during exposure to ambient motion. Balance and perceptual responses to vestibular stimulation were measured before and after a 10 min period of imposed, moderate intensity ...

On balancing of passive systems

open access: yes2007 European Control Conference (ECC), 2007
It is shown how the application of various standard balancing techniques to general lossless systems basically leads to the same result: the pair of to-be-balanced functions is given by two copies of the energy function. Hence balancing will not yield any information about the relative importance of the state components in a balanced realization.
