Spontaneous and pharmacologically induced hypothermia protect mice against endotoxic shock

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Background and Purpose Despite the well‐known occurrence of hypothermia during sepsis, its underlying biological nature and adaptive value remain debated. Experimental Approach Using indirect calorimetry, telemetry, thermal gradient studies and pharmacological studies, we examined the thermal and metabolic responses of mice treated with a shock ...

Parallels and discrepancies between non‐native species introductions and human migration

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Biological invasions and human migrations have increased globally due to socio‐economic drivers and environmental factors that have enhanced cultural, economic, and geographic connectivity. Both processes involve the movement, establishment, and spread of species, yet unfold within fundamentally different philosophical, social and biological ...

Optimal robustness of passive discrete time systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
We construct optimally robust realizations of a given rational transfer function that represents a passive discrete-time system. We link it to the solution set of linear matrix inequalities defining passive transfer functions. We also consider the problem of finding the nearest passive system to a given non-passive one.

Surface Passivation in Empirical Tight Binding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Empirical Tight Binding (TB) methods are widely used in atomistic device simulations. Existing TB methods to passivate dangling bonds fall into two categories: 1) Method that explicitly includes passivation atoms is limited to passivation with atoms and small molecules only.

Characteristics of meconium impaction/retention in newborn foals: From 2006 to 2024

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Background Meconium impaction/retention is a significant cause of colic in foals. Historically, limitations of both medical and surgical treatment are noted. Outcomes of meconium impaction/retention have not recently been reported. Objective To describe case characteristics and outcomes in foals with meconium impaction/retention.

An Extremum-Seeking Co-Simulation Based Framework for Passivation Theory and its Application in Adaptive Cruise Control Systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
In this report, we apply an input-output transformation passivation method, described in our previous works, to an Adaptive Cruise Control system. We analyze the system's performance under a co-simulation framework that makes use of an online optimization method called extremum-seeking to achieve the optimized behavior.

Physician Assisted Dying as an Extension of Healing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The role of a physician is to provide care for those who seek their assistance. Lisa Yount attributes the most ancient statement about this activity to the Hippocratic Oath.

Acute severe lameness associated with proliferative bone on the dorsal middle phalanx (19 cases)

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Background Injury resulting in proliferative new bone formation on the dorsal aspect of the middle phalanx (P2) has been recognised by equine veterinarians and is generally referred to as capsulitis. However, no retrospective case series has been published on the condition. Objectives To describe the clinical features, treatment, and outcome of
