Passive wake flow control of vertical axis wind turbines in array configurations

open access: yesEngineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics
This study introduces a passive wake control strategy for vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) arrays using arc-shaped deflectors. Unlike prior works focusing solely on layout or blade optimization, this research systematically explores the effects of ...

Vectoring Control of Bilateral Parallel Offset Jet: Flow Characteristics and Control Mechanism

open access: yesAerospace
We proposed a bilateral parallel offset jet model that enables jet vectoring control without the need for an active high-pressure secondary flow. Flow characteristics, including deflection force, wall pressure distribution, and flow structures, were ...

Hybrid Active and Passive Control of Vibratory Power Flow in Flexible Isolation System

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2000
A hybrid active and passive vibration control strategy is developed to reduce the total power flows from machines, subject to multiple excitations, to supporting flexible structures.

Passive Control of Viscous Flow via Elastic Snap-Through [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We demonstrate the passive control of viscous flow in a channel by using an elastic arch embedded in the flow. Depending on the fluid flux, the arch may ‘snap’ between two states — constricting and unconstricting — that differ in hydraulic conductivity ...

Design of a Multistable Finger Prosthesis with Programmable Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This research article shows the development of a multistable programmble metamaterial for the use as a finger prosthesis. The material was designed on different hierarchical levels where the influence of geometrical parameters and combination of mechanical elements was explored.

Morphology, Transport, and Dynamics of Protein Adsorption in Open‐Cell Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Stainless steel (SS) open‐cell foams are shown to adsorb more protein per unit area than previously reported 316L SS and chromium oxide surfaces under static and flow conditions. An integrated approach combining 3D pore imaging, flow simulation, and protein adsorption experiments characterizes the foam’s performance.

Passive control of flow structure interaction between a sphere and free-surface

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
Flow characteristics for both a smooth and a vented sphere such as velocity vectors, patterns of streamlines, vorticity contours, stream-wise fluctuations, cross-stream velocity fluctuations and Reynolds stress correlations between a sphere and free ...

Materials‐Driven Additive Manufacturing for Electrical Machines: Qualification‐Oriented Design Beyond Geometric Freedom

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This perspective reframes additive manufacturing for electrical machines as a qualification‐limited materials and architecture design problem. It links process–structure–property–performance relationships to magnetic, conducting, dielectric, and thermal property windows, highlighting where AM can enable segmented magnetic circuits, permanent magnet ...
