Passive microwave remote sensing for sea ice research [PDF]

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1985
During the last decade, considerable progress has been made in the application of passive microwave remote sensing to the study of sea ice. With the December 1972 launch of the Nimbus 5 electrically scanning microwave radiometer (ESMR‐5), complete coverage of the polar regions provided the synoptic observations needed for undertaking a detailed study ...

An Effective Emission Depth Model for Passive Microwave Remote Sensing

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2016
Knowing the exact penetration depth for passive microwave will enable us to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of the targets. But now, there is only a penetration depth model that can calculate the specific depth while it is suitable for active microwaves.

Impact of data assimilation on Arctic sea‐ice thickness variability and its coupling with atmospheric forcing

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We document for the first time how the assimilation of CS2SMOS observations improves the model representation of Arctic sea‐ice thickness (SIT) and its variability: biases are reduced (top row), while excessive variability in the Beaufort Sea and lack of variability in the ice pack are both corrected (bottom row).

Development of novel instruments and techniques for passive microwave remote sensing

open access: yes, 2023
Earth Observation using satellites has helped to better model our planet. The goal of such systems is to provide large data sets to help to understand the effects of our actions on the climate, to predict storms in near real-time, to prevent forest fires, or to prevent desertification, among others.
