The underappreciated roles of fog and dew on vegetation and biocrusts
Summary Fog and dew represent minor components of ecosystem water budgets in most ecosystems. However, fog and dew can play an essential role in ecosystem dynamics and are particularly important for water‐limited systems. In addition to serving as direct water inputs, fog and dew can influence microclimate and water redistribution, thereby promoting ...

Passive Microwave Remote Sensing of Rain from Satellite Sensors
The purpose of this chapter is to offer an accurate treatment of relevant aspects of satellite remote sensing of precipitation using passive microwave (PMW) radiometers. Microwave observations of the Earth’s system differ substantially from those based on optical and infrared wavelengths.

Identifying Energy Balance Drivers of Greenland Ice Sheet Surface Melt Using Causal Discovery
Abstract Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) mass loss has accelerated in recent decades, primarily due to enhanced surface melt. Identifying the causal dependencies of surface melt remains challenging with conventional correlations. Using the PCMCI+ ${\text{PCMCI}}^{+}$ causal discovery algorithm applied to CESM2 large‐ensemble simulations and evaluated ...

AMSR2 Soil Moisture Downscaling Using Temperature and Vegetation Data
Soil moisture (SM) applications in terrestrial hydrology require higher spatial resolution soil moisture products than those provided by passive microwave remote sensing instruments (grid resolution of 9 km or larger).

Abstract What is the relative importance of variability in local evaporation versus moisture convergence from lower latitudes to changes in autumn/winter Arctic Ocean precipitation? Past research has offered sometimes contradictory answers. Here we offer some resolution to this question by addressing two research gaps.

Dual‐Mode Magnetic Elastomer for On‐Demand Motion and Degradation
A dual‐mode magnetic elastomer is introduced, enabling DC field‐driven programmable actuation and AC field‐driven magnetothermal degradation. GHz‐range magnetic fields generate ultrafast heating of magnetic nanoparticles that activates cleavage of the silicone elastomer matrix.
