The NuScale Advanced Passive Safety Design
ASME 2011 Small Modular Reactors Symposium, 2011NuScale Power is designing an advanced passive nuclear power plant that does not rely on any external sources of power or coolant for safety. Accordingly, the NuScale design inherently prevents the types of issues which led to fuel damage at the Fukushima Daiichi facility.

Reliability Assessment of Passive Safety Systems
1998Innovative reactor concepts make use of passive safety features to a large extent in combination with active safety or operational systems. Following the IAEA definitions a passive component does not need external input (especially energy) to operate.

Intelligent safety systems integrating active and passive safety
2007Side crashes occur relatively often and the injury risk in a side crash is higher than in a frontal crash due to the small distance between the occupant and the impacting object. For the same reason, little time is available for optimal deployment of collision mitigation measures using in-crash detection technology.

Guardrails and Passive Safety for Motorcyclists
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1987<div class="htmlview paragraph">Motorcyclists having fallen off their motorcycles are especially endangered if they impact on guardrails. Accident analyses show that two of three motorcyclists who impact on guardrails are severely injured.

Experimental Investigation of Characteristics of Passive Safety Elements
Advanced Materials Research, 2013Development of passive safety elements is a key component in the design and manufacture of railway vehicles. Proper functioning of these elements is of great importance and has a direct influence on the safety of passengers, goods and vehicles. Different types of railway vehicles require absorption elements of different geometries and absorption power.

European vehicle passive safety network
1999The general objective of the European Vehicle Passive Safety Network is to contribute to the reduction of the number of road traffic victims in Europe by passive safety measures. The aim of the road safety policy of the European Commission is to reduce the annual total of fatalities to 18000 in 2010.

From Passive to Active Safety Systems
2007State of the art automotive restraint systems have reached a very high level of occupant protection. Vehicle construction, belt and airbag systems are the most important lifesavers in this respect. The vehicle installation rate of restraint systems covers almost 100%.
