Topicality and object–past participle agreement in Friulian

2022
AbstractChapter 12 argues that object–-past participle agreement in Friulian is sensitive to the discourse-pragmatic status of the direct object as given topic or aboutness-shift topic. It occurs in transitive clauses with the in-situ direct object independently of the presence of a resumptive object clitic within the verbal domain.

Movement and Agreement in Italian Past Participles and Defective Phases

Linguistic Inquiry, 2008
In this article, we propose a phase-based alternative to Kayne’s (1989) analysis of past participle agreement in Italian. This analysis captures the principal facts without making reference to specifier-head agreement. Instead, the possibility of overt past participle agreement is determined by the Phase Impenetrability Condition and is linked to the ...

Semantic effects of agreement: The case of French past participle agreement

Probus, 1998

Several analyses have been put forth, among which, one proposing a close link between the omission of object clitics and the presence of past participle ...

open access: yes, 2017
The chapter offers an overview of the analysis of past participle agreement, a central phenomenon in Romance, addressed here in a comparative perspective, with special reference to Italian and French. The theoretical issues raised by the phenomenon are at the core of the chapter, from the influential account first developed by Kayne (1989) in terms of ...

Past Participle Agreement

2020
In this book, the traditional definition of ‘grammaticalization’ is challenged in the light of current developments in grammar theory. The main innovation of this approach is the focus on the feature composition of lexical items. From this perspective, the loss of past participle agreement in Catalan is analyzed on the basis of newly collected data as ...
