The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Testing the Cosmological Principle in the radio sky [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The Cosmological Principle states that the Universe is statistically isotropic and homogeneous on large scales. In particular, this implies statistical isotropy in the galaxy distribution, after removal of a dipole anisotropy due to the observer's motion.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Most Frequent Contact Allergens of Oral Cavity and Lips

open access: yesČeská Stomatologie a Praktické Zubní Lékařství, 2007
Oral cavity is frequently or permanently exposed to a wide spectrum of compounds, some of which possess irritation or sensitization potential. Persons who are subjected to stomatological treatment and use oral hygiene are exposed to growing number of new,

Nickel, chromium and cobalt: the relevant allergens in allergic contact dermatitis. Comparative study between two periods: 1995-2002 and 2003-2015 [PDF]

open access: yesAnais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, 2018
: Background: Metals are common agents of allergic contact dermatitis, occupational or not, with decreasing incidence over the last years in some countries that have regulated the amount of nickel in objects.

Improved methods for detecting gravitational waves associated with short gamma-ray bursts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In the era of second generation ground-based gravitational wave detectors, short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) will be among the most promising astrophysical events for joint electromagnetic and gravitational wave observation.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Patch test standard series recommended by the Brazilian Contact Dermatitis Study Group during the 2006-2011 period [PDF]

open access: yesAnais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, 2013
A retrospective study was carried out between 2006-2011. Six hundred and eighteen patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis underwent the standard patch test series recommended by the Brazilian Contact Dermatitis Research Group.

Quicksilver: Fast Predictive Image Registration - a Deep Learning Approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper introduces Quicksilver, a fast deformable image registration method. Quicksilver registration for image-pairs works by patch-wise prediction of a deformation model based directly on image appearance.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
