Assessing the Impact of Urban Sprawl on Net Primary Productivity of Terrestrial Ecosystems Using a Process-Based Model—A Case Study in Nanjing, China

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2015
Urban sprawl/urbanization has large impacts on the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems. Net primary production (NPP) is an important indicator for estimating the earth’s ability to support life and aids the evaluation of sustainable ...

A Simple Theory of Defensive Patenting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This paper examines innovating firms’ incentives to engage in defensive patenting. It first establishes a “truce equilibrium” in patent enforcement: when litigation is costly, the equal strength of two symmetric parties’ patent portfolios deters any ...

Evolutionary interplay between viruses and R‐loops

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses interact with specialized nucleic acid structures called R‐loops to influence host transcription, epigenetic states, latency, and immune evasion. This Perspective examines the roles of R‐loops in viral replication, integration, and silencing, and how viruses co‐opt or avoid these structures.

Community Detection and Growth Potential Prediction Using the Stochastic Block Model and the Long Short-term Memory from Patent Citation Networks

open access: yes, 2019
Scoring patent documents is very useful for technology management. However, conventional methods are based on static models and, thus, do not reflect the growth potential of the technology cluster of the patent.

Disruption of SETD3‐mediated histidine‐73 methylation by the BWCFF‐associated β‐actin G74S mutation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The β‐actin G74S mutation causes altered interaction of actin with SETD3, reducing histidine‐73 methylation efficiency and forming two distinct actin variants. The variable ratio of these variants across cell types and developmental stages contributes to tissue‐specific phenotypical changes. This imbalance may impair actin dynamics and mechanosensitive

Patent Clutter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Patent claims are supposed to clearly and succinctly describe the patented invention, and only the patented invention. This Article hypothesizes that a substantial amount of language in patent claims is in fact not about the core invention, which may ...

Purification tags markedly affect self‐aggregation of CPEB3

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Although recombinant proteins are used to study protein aggregation in vitro, uncleaved tags can interfere with accurate interpretation. Our findings demonstrate that His₆‐GFP and His₁₂ tags significantly affect liquid droplet and amyloid fibril formation in the intrinsically disordered region (IDR) of mouse cytoplasmic polyadenylation element‐binding ...

Circulating histones as clinical biomarkers in critically ill conditions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circulating histones are emerging as promising biomarkers in critical illness due to their diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic potential. Detection methods such as ELISA and mass spectrometry provide reliable approaches for quantifying histone levels in plasma samples.
