Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?

A unit process log reduction database for water reuse practitioners

open access: yesWater Research X
Pathogen reduction for the purpose of human health protection is a critical function provided by water reuse systems. Pathogen reduction performance potential is dependent on a wide range of design and operational parameters.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

A mobile context-aware medical training system for the reduction of pathogen transmission

open access: yesSmart Learning Environments, 2017
Even with the adoption of modern technology within the medical system, the spread of deadly pathogens remains a silent, yet deadly killer. Indeed, e-health, and in particular m-health is at the forefront of the computing portion of modern medical care ...

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

Finding novel vulnerabilities of hypomorphic BRCA1 alleles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Synthetic lethality screens performed to identify novel vulnerabilities often model complete gene loss, thereby overlooking patient‐derived hypomorphic mutations. In this study, we have performed genome‐wide CRISPR screens on BRCA1 hypomorphic mutations, showing BRCA1I26A behaves like wild‐type, while BRCA1R1699Q mimics deficiency. Furthermore, we have

Kirramyces destructans in Australia: biosecurity threat or elusive native pathogen? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Kirramyces destructans was first described in 1996 from north Sumatra, Indonesia, where it caused severe leaf and shoot blight on Eucalyptus grandis in nurseries and young plantations.

Loss of proton‐sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the pH‐sensing receptor TDAG8 accelerates colorectal cancer progression in mice. Animals lacking TDAG8 expression had increased tumor growth, DNA damage, and recruitment of tumor‐associated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes.

Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Processing Conditions Affecting Pathogen Reduction in Dry Fermented Sausages

open access: yesJournal of Food Protection
Dry fermented sausages (DFSs) rely on nonthermal hurdles for safety, yet the impact of pathogen control measures has not been systematically evaluated. In this review, 207 datasets from 40 challenge studies were compiled and analyzed using inactivation ...

Pathogens\' Reduction in Vermicompost Process Resulted from the Mixed Sludge Treatments-Household Wastes

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Health and Sustainable Development, 2016
Introduction: The presence of pathogenic microbial agents and pathogens in organic fertilizers causes health problems and disease transmission. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of vermicomposting process in improve the microbial ...
