While we rely heavily on clinician evaluation of the mouth to define the course of mucositis, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) provide an important component to the overall assessment of the condition. PROs are especially significant because there is often a disconnect between how clinicians and patients view the severity of mucositis.

Out of all outcomes, restoration of function and productivity and reduction in pain are of the upmost importance.
