Impact of Limited Health Literacy on Patient‐Reported Outcomes in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yesArthritis care & research, 2020
Health disparities in patient‐reported outcomes by income and education are well documented; however, the impact of health literacy on patient‐reported outcomes has received less attention. We examined independent effects of income, education, and health

ERBIN limits epithelial cell plasticity via suppression of TGF‐β signaling

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In breast and lung cancer patients, low ERBIN expression correlates with poor clinical outcomes. Here, we show that ERBIN inhibits TGF‐β‐induced epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in NMuMG breast and A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell lines. ERBIN suppresses TGF‐β/SMAD signaling and reduces TGF‐β‐induced ERK phosphorylation.

Systematic review of the use of translated patient-reported outcome measures in cancer trials

open access: yesTrials, 2021
Background Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are used in clinical trials to assess the effectiveness and tolerability of interventions. Inclusion of participants from different ethnic backgrounds is essential for generalisability of cancer trial results ...

Comorbidities in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Their Association with Patient-reported Outcomes: Results of Claims Data Linked to Questionnaire Survey

open access: yesJournal of Rheumatology, 2019
Objective. To investigate the prevalence of comorbidities in a population-based cohort of persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared to matched controls and to examine their association with patient-reported outcomes in a survey sample.

C‐mannosylation promotes ADAMTS1 activation and secretion in human testicular germ cell tumor NEC8 cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
C‐mannosylation is a unique form of protein glycosylation. In this study, we demonstrated that ADAMTS1 is C‐mannosylated at Trp562 and Trp565 in human testicular germ cell tumor NEC8 cells. We found that C‐mannosylation of ADAMTS1 is essential for its secretion, processing, enzymatic activity, and ability to promote vasculogenic mimicry. These findings

The Japanese version of the National Cancer Institute’s patient-reported outcomes version of the common terminology criteria for adverse events (PRO-CTCAE): psychometric validation and discordance between clinician and patient assessments of adverse events

open access: yesJournal of Patient-Reported Outcomes, 2018
BackgroundThe Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (PRO-CTCAE) was developed by the National Cancer Institute as an adverse event assessment system to evaluate patients’ symptoms, which tend to be ...

Ergothioneine supplementation improves pup phenotype and survival in a murine model of spinal muscular atrophy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disease affecting motor neurons. Individuals with SMA experience mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of an antioxidant and neuroprotective substance, ergothioneine (ERGO), on an SMNΔ7 mouse model of SMA.

Patient-Reported Outcomes: Conceptual Issues

open access: yesValue in Health, 2007
There is a broad agreement that patient-reported outcome (PRO) assessment in health care should proceed from a strong conceptual basis, with rationales clearly articulated in advance concerning what is to be measured and how this is to be accomplished.

Microbial exopolysaccharide production by polyextremophiles in the adaptation to multiple extremes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Polyextremophiles are microorganisms that endure multiple extreme conditions by various adaptation strategies that also include the production of exopolysaccharides (EPSs). This review provides an integrated perspective on EPS biosynthesis, function, and regulation in these organisms, emphasizing their critical role in survival and highlighting their ...

Perfect health not so perfect after all – a methodological study on patient-reported outcome measures in 2574 patients following percutaneous coronary intervention

open access: yesHealth and Quality of Life Outcomes
Background Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are crucial to capture patients’ health and illness status. Selecting the most suitable PROM to measure self-reported health in a specific study population is essential.
