Pattern matching and call by pattern
1975The paper describes SNARK, a new pattern matching language which was specifically designed with the aim of extending programming languages with a new and effective control mechanism (pattern directed procedure call). SNARK features a powerful and extensible pattern language and an efficient pattern retrieval mechanism.

Treating Pattern Sublanguages as Patterns with an Application to Organizational Patterns
Proceedings of the 22nd European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs, 2017Organizing people is very important and one of the great challenges, and in particular in software development. Organizational patterns are the key to piecemeal growth of organizations. To deal with the complexity of choosing right pattern sequences and understanding pattern languages in general, we propose representing them as patterns.

We present a data model for tracking mobile objects and reporting the result of queries. The model relies on a discrete view of the spatio-temporal space, where the 2D space and the time axis are respectively partitioned in a finite set of user-defined areas and in constant-size intervals.

We generate a native pattern language from a context-free grammar. So if we have the underlying grammar of code that needs to be analyzed, or renovated the pattern language comes for free. We use native patterns for recognition and renovation of code. The pattern language is global in the sense that patterns can match entire programs.

Patterns provide a mechanism for rendering design advice in a reference format. Software design is a massive topic, and when faced with a design problem, one must be able to focus on something as close to the problem as you can get. Patterns can help by trying to identify common solutions to recurring problems.

There is an old saying that you shouldn’t try to reinvent the wheel, and honestly, in essence it is a very good saying. But with all such sayings, a modicum of common sense is required for its application. If everyone down through history took the saying literally, your car would have wheels made out of the trunk of a tree (which the MythBusters proved
