Predicting Pavement Roughness Using Deep Learning Algorithms

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2021
Transportation agencies should measure pavement performance to appropriately strategize road preservation, maintenance, and rehabilitation activities. The international roughness index (IRI), which is a means to quantify pavement roughness, is a primary performance indicator.

Evolution of Pavement Winter Roughness

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2005
The functional service level of roads is quantified in terms of roughness. This parameter considers every road surface defect that causes passenger vehicle discomfort. Roughness is measured by a quality index, the international roughness index (IRI). Roughness gives an overall appreciation of road profile quality without, however, permitting a deeper ...

Pavement Roughness Measurement and Evaluation

1971
Vertical accelerations of a passenger in an automobile are automatically summed while traveling a section of road at 51.5 mph. A roughness index is obtained by summing the accelerations and dividing by the time elapsed during the test. The index is subjectively related to the riding quality of pavements.

Pavement Roughness In Kentucky

1982
Over two hundred pavement sections in Kentucky have been periodically measured for pavement roughness over a period of several years. This pavement service-life historical data can be used to assess quality of construction, pavement service-life, present and anticipated pavement condition.

Pavement Roughness Studies

1962
During 1961, the equivalent of about 800 lane-miles of pavement were tested and analyzed. The largest portion of this mileage was on completed Interstate projects. In November, three pavements selected by the Bureau of Public Roads for serviceability-index ratings (6) were tested; and these are discussed briefly in this report.
