An alternative approach to pavement roughness evaluation
International Journal of Pavement Engineering, 2008Although structural capacity seems to be the major concern of many pavement engineers, road users primarily judge the quality of a road based on its roughness or ride quality. Several parameters influence the ride quality of pavements as felt by the road users.

Definition and measurement of pavement surface roughness
Wear, 1979Abstract Pavement roughness is divided into three scales; roughness, macrotexture and microtexture. All three are surface irregularities of random nature. The dividing lines between them are based on functional considerations such as traffic safety and ride quality.

Mathematical insights into the relationship between pavement roughness and vehicle vibration
International Journal of Pavement Engineering, 2020Pavement roughness is an essential indicator used in road maintenance and asset management. As a well-recognised measurement technique, the responsive devices allow us to collect roughness information by measuring the in-car vibration.

Roughness deterioration models for unsealed road pavements and their use in pavement management
International Journal of Pavement Engineering, 2018The present study aims to review the efficacy of three widely used roughness prediction models (Highway Development Model/HDM-4, Australian and South African) in the determination of blading frequencies to control roughness in the management of unsealed roads.

Dynamics analysis of a missile vehicle considering the pavement roughness
2017 IEEE International Conference on Cybernetics and Intelligent Systems (CIS) and IEEE Conference on Robotics, Automation and Mechatronics (RAM), 2017In order to analyze the acceleration response of the connecting bolts on missiles during the missile vehicle maneuvering, a method to simulate the roughness of pavements via the power spectral density of pavements is proposed according to GB/T 7031–2005. A dynamical model of the missile vehicle is built by using "Magic Formula" and Lagrangian dynamics.

Investigating the Effects of Pavement Roughness on Freeway Safety using Data from Five States
, 2020Traffic crashes occur usually because of a combination of human, roadway/environment, and vehicle factors. Pavement condition is closely related to these three factors as it is one of the most important roadway/environment factors and it affects driving ...

Evaluation of the Effect of Pavement Roughness on Skid Resistance
Journal of Transportation Engineering, 2010Roughness of a pavement surface is commonly correlated to its serviceability. On the other hand, on many occasions, investigators have attributed pavement roughness to inadequate skid resistance (friction) as well. However, current pavement friction evaluation and standardization models have yet to incorporate effects of pavement roughness.

Based on the results of recent research, it is possible to develop performance specifications for a simple instrument that would measure profile-type roughness in only one wheelpath—instead of two, as in the profilometer—and which would compute a roughness index that is as highly correlated with pavement rideability measurements as the roughness ...
