High speed turning of Inconel 718 using PVD-coated PCBN tools [PDF]

open access: yesCIRP Annals, 2016
Abstract Five different coatings and two PCBN grades were evaluated when high speed turning Inconel 718. Tool life was 40% higher when employing TiSiN coated over uncoated inserts at 200 m/min. When operating at 300–450 m/min however, coatings provided no appreciable benefit.

Enhancing high-speed cutting performance of Inconel 718 superalloy via heat inhibiting with a bio-textured PcBN tool

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Ni-based superalloy exhibits poor machinability due to low thermal conductivity and work hardening, leading to high cutting temperatures that accelerate tool wear and degrade surface quality.

Tool Wear Mechanisms of pcBN tooling during High-Speed Machining of Gray Cast Iron

open access: yesProcedia CIRP, 2018
The presence of graphite particles in gray cast iron commonly implies a good machinability, especially if compared to common steels. However, increasing industrial demands have resulted in a new interest for high-speed machining of these materials with higher performing tool materials than the traditionally used.
