Monitoring mercury across the National Wildlife Refuge System using a biosentinel approach
The Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 4, May 2026.We measured mercury concentrations in 1,356 dragonfly larvae collected from 30 National Wildlife Refuges across the United States and found wide variability among refuges, spanning the full range reported for other protected lands. Using a management‐focused mercury impairment index, 80% of refuges contained sites classified as moderate or higher risk.
