The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Power Collection from Wave Energy Farms

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2013
Most Wave Energy Converters (WECs) produce highly distorted power due to thereciprocal motion induced by ocean waves. Some WEC systems have integrated energystorage that overcomes this limitation, but add significant expenses to an already costlysystem ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Technical note: Improved calculation of volume, FT correction, and other derived data for polished zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronology [PDF]

open access: yesGeochronology
Polishing mounted zircon crystals prior to bulk grain (U-Th)/He thermochronology analysis provides opportunities for characterizing and subsampling each grain via in situ methods to obtain additional information relevant for (U-Th)/He date interpretation

Resonance peak in underdoped cuprates

open access: yes, 2003
The magnetic susceptibility measured in neutron scattering experiments in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-y}$ is interpreted based on the self-consistent solution of the t-J model of a Cu-O plane.

What the resonance peak cannot do [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
In certain cuprates, a spin 1 resonance mode is prominent in the magnetic structure measured by neutron scattering. It has been proposed that this mode is responsible for significant features seen in other spectroscopies, such as photoemission and ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
