Abstract The direct approach of Shapira a for estimating the probability of a defined horizontal peak ground acceleration (PGA) being exceeded at a specified location has been applied to fourteen cities in southern Africa. The analysis is based on the known seismic history of the region (south of 22° S) since the beginning of the 19th century, and

Empirical methods are commonly employed to predict the PGA distribution of an earthquake and are widely used. However, current empirical methods assume the seismic source to be a point source, a line source, or a plane source, where the energy is concentrated and released uniformly.

Seismic hazard assessment involves quantitatively estimating ground shaking at site. There are two main approaches for estimating seismic hazard, Deterministic seismic hazard assessment (DSHA) and Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA). In the present investigation DSHA is used, it relies on the worst-case scenario earthquake.
