Crucial role of sidewalls in velocity distributions in quasi-2D granular gases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Our experiments and three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations of particles confined to a vertical monolayer by closely spaced frictional walls (sidewalls) yield velocity distributions with non-Gaussian tails and a peak near zero velocity ...

Velocity statistics in excited granular media

open access: yes, 1999
We present an experimental study of velocity statistics for a partial layer of inelastic colliding beads driven by a vertically oscillating boundary.

Experimental and theoretical study of coupled influence of flow velocity increment and particle size on particle retention and release in porous media

open access: yesWater Science and Engineering, 2017
Experimental and theoretical studies were carried out to investigate the coupled influence of flow velocity increment and particle size on the retention and release of particles in porous media.

Suspension flow: do particles act as mixers?

open access: yes, 2015
Recently, Roht et al. [J. Contam. Hydrol. 145, 10-16 (2013)] observed that the presence of suspended non-Brownian macroscopic particles decreased the dispersivity of a passive solute, for a pressure-driven flow in a narrow parallel-plates channel at low ...

Diffusive Radiation in One-dimensional Langmuir Turbulence

open access: yes, 2007
We calculate spectra of radiation produced by a relativistic particle in the presence of one-dimensional Langmuir turbulence which might be generated by a streaming instability in the plasma, in particular, in the shock front or at the shock-shock ...

Transition from a dissipative to a quasi-elastic system of particles with tunable repulsive interactions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A two-dimensional system of particles with tunable repulsive interactions is experimentally investigated. Soft ferromagnetic particles are placed on a vibrating rough plate and vertically confined, so that they perform a horizontal Brownian motion in a ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Experimental study on mesoscopic damage and fragmentation characteristics of hard rock under repeated particle impacts

open access: yesRock and Soil Mechanics, 2022
Particle impact, a new drilling technology, has been applied in drilling and gas and oil exploitation. Also, it is considerably promising as an assisting rock-breaking method for the excavation of tunnels in extremely hard rocks.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Quadruple-peaked spectral line profiles as a tool to constrain gravitational potential of shell galaxies

open access: yes, 2012
Stellar shells observed in many giant elliptical and lenticular as well as a few spiral and dwarf galaxies, presumably result from galaxy mergers. Line-of-sight velocity distributions of the shells could, in principle, if measured with a sufficiently ...
