Computed tomography-derived area and density of pectoralis muscle associated disease severity and longitudinal changes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a case control study

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2019
BackgroundMuscle wasting is associated with prognosis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The cross-sectional area of skeletal muscles on computed tomography (CT) could serve as a method to evaluate body composition.

Dual Functions of Dietary Rubber Seed Oil Supplementation: Enriching N‐3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Enhancing Antioxidant Capacity in Pekin Ducks

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Dietary RSO supplementation improved growth performance, simultaneously enriched n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n‐3 PUFA), and enhanced antioxidant capacity in Pekin ducks, which suggested that RSO has the potential to be a novel n‐3 PUFA source and an antioxidant for Pekin ducks to generate animal functional foods.

Effects of dietary conjugated linoleic acid on lipid peroxidation in breast and thigh muscles of broiler chickens

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2017
The effect of dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on lipid peroxidation in the breast muscles (Pectoralis major and Pectoralis minor) and thigh muscles of broiler chickens was investigated.

How Grip Variation Effects Shoulder Complex Muscle Activation During the Pull-Up [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Pull-ups are a common training exercise essential for muscle growth in resistance-based training workouts and workout programs. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of different pull-up grips on muscle activation in six college aged ...

Reduction of Ribonucleotide Reductase Subunit RRM2 Potentially Impairs Gut Function of Woody Breast Broilers

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Woody breast compromises meat quality leading to reduced consumer appeal. Although its causes are unclear, improvements observed with certain dietary supplements suggest that gut health may influence woody breast development. Ribonucleotide reductase subunit RRM2 is vital for mitochondrial function and gastrointestinal integrity, and alteration in its ...

Determination of a strength index for upper body local endurance strength in sedentary individuals: a cross sectional analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A range of balance between flexor and extensor muscles is fundamental in order to prevent pathologies caused by bad postures or to ensure health of the joint as a measure of prevention of overtraining in specific muscle groups. Therefore, the aim of this

Whole transcriptome analysis of the pectoralis major muscle reveals molecular mechanisms involved with white striping in broiler chickens

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2019
White striping (WS) is one of the most common myopathies identified in broiler chickens leading to substantial production losses, where the incidence reaches 12% in commercial chickens.

Fasting and Refeeding Mediated Phospholipid Remodeling Plays an Important Role in Improving Meat Quality of Aged Laying Hens

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study explored fasting‐induced physiological remodeling effects on meat quality in aged laying hens. Fasting for 15 days (F15) significantly reduced abdominal fat, intermuscular fat width, subcutaneous fat thickness, and liver index versus pre‐fasting (F0) (p < 0.05), which recovered post‐refeeding.

Contractile properties of the pigeon supracoracoideus during different modes of flight [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The supracoracoideus (SUPRA) is the primary upstroke muscle for avian flight and is the antagonist to the downstroke muscle, the pectoralis (PECT). We studied in vivo contractile properties and mechanical power output of both muscles during take-off ...

Selective activation of shoulder, trunk, and arm muscles: A comparative analysis of different push-up variants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Context: The push-up is a widely used exercise for upper limb strengthening that can be performed with many variants. A comprehensive analysis of muscle activation during the ascendant phase (AP) and descendant phase (DP) in different variants could be ...
