In recent years, interactions between caged finfish and jellyfish have been increasingly reported, with major fish mortalities and severe economic impacts to aquaculture facilities. The scyphomedusa Pelagia noctiluca has been responsible for documented mortality events in Eastern Atlantic (Irish Sea) and the Mediterranean Sea.

Vrsta Pelagia noctiluca je skifomeduza u potpunosti prilagođena pelagičkom načinu života. Većina skifomezuza odlikuje se složenim životnim ciklusom koji uključuje meduzoidnu i polipoidnu generaciju, dok pelagija preskače stadij skifopolipa te ima direktan razvoj iz planule u efiru. Tijelo je zvonolike građe sastavljeno od eksumbrele i subumbrele.
