Impact of Tusk Anomalies on the Long-Term Foraging Ecology of Narwhals. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We combined stable δ13C and δ15N isotope analysis and genetic sexing to investigate whether narwhals with dental anomalies have a distinct long‐term foraging ecology. Our results showed no difference in stable isotope signature of two‐tusked male and one‐tusked female narwhals relative to normal‐tusked narwhals, indicating that an extra tusk does not ...

A comparative acoustic-abundance estimation of pelagic redfish (Sebastes mentella) from hull-mounted and deep-towed acoustic systems [PDF]

open access: yesICES Journal of Marine Science, 2003
Abstract During an international acoustic survey on pelagic redfish (Sebastes mentella) in the Irminger Sea in June–July 2001, a deep-towed vehicle carrying a dual-frequency SIMRAD EK60 Mk1 echosounder was used experimentally to observe and estimate redfish abundance at depths greater than 500 m. Comparison was made with the hull-mounted

The fishery for pelagic redfish (Sebastes mentella) in the Irminger Sea and adjacent waters

open access: yesICES Journal of Marine Science, 2006
Abstract This paper describes the pelagic fishery for deep-sea redfish, Sebastes mentella, in the Irminger Sea and adjacent waters, from the start of commercial exploitation of the resource in 1982. The information prior to 1990 is mostly based on ICES reports and unpublished data, but from 1990, logbook data from a joint database on a ...

The Greenland–Scotland Ridge in a Changing Ocean: Time to Act?

open access: yesMarine Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Greenland–Scotland Ridge is a submarine mountain that rises up to 500 m below the sea surface and extends from the east coast of Greenland to the continental shelf of Iceland and across the Faroe Islands to Scotland. The ridge not only separates deeper ocean basins on either side, that is, the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans, but also ...

Spontaneous melanotic lesions in axillary seabream, Pagellus acarne (Risso) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper, we describe spontaneous melanotic lesions in the skin of axillary seabream, Pagellus acarne (Risso) from a defined area of the Portuguese Coast, located in Cabo da Roca and Foz do Arelho.

A Holistic Framework for the Protection and Management of Seagrass Meadows as Natural Assets of the Sea of Marmara

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Seagrass meadows in the Sea of Marmara (SoM) are under unprecedented ecological stress due to cumulative anthropogenic pressures and climate‐driven changes, exacerbated by recent large‐scale disturbances such as the 2021 mucilage event. Their degradation threatens biodiversity, coastal stability and the broader ecological integrity of the ...

Comparison of Environmental DNA Metabarcoding and Trawl Data Highlights Gear Selectivity of Marine Demersal Fish Surveys on the Faroese Plateau

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
The study compared trawl and eDNA metabarcoding of demersal fish communities in an open ocean environment around the Faroe Islands. eDNA provided a comparable assessment of demersal species biomass and revealed additional spatial information on keystone species known to be under‐sampled by demersal trawls due to size and behavioral traits.

Overview, roles, and performance of the North East Atlantic fischeries commission (NEAFC) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
According to the 1995 United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement (UNFSA), straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks are to be managed by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs), consisting of coastal states and relevant Distant Water ...

Widespread decline in the abundance of sea cucumber assemblages in atolls of the protected Rowley Shoals, northwestern Australia

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 2, March 2026.
Abstract The Rowley Shoals, off northwestern Australia, are renowned as a biodiversity hotspot. This remote system comprises three atolls, Clerke, Imperieuse and Mermaid, which in recent years have been increasingly targeted by illegal fishing, a pressure rising across the Indo‐Pacific.

Advances in methods for determining fecundity: application of the new methods to some marine fishes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Estimation of individual egg production (realized fecundity) is a key step either to understand the stock and recruit relationship or to carry out fisheries-independent assessment of spawning stock biomass using egg production methods.
