Standards for electron probe microanalysis of silicates prepared by convenient method [PDF]

open access: yes, 1966
Standard compositions suitable for electron probe microanalysis of various silicates are prepared by coprecipitation of specified salts with colloidal silica to form a gel which is decomposed into a powdered oxide mixture and compressed into thin pellets.

An investigation into the behaviour of air rifle pellets in ballistic gel and their interaction with bone [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Although air weapons are considerably lower in power than other firearms, there is increasing concern that serious injuries can result from their misuse.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Do trophic subsidies affect the outcome of introductions of a non-native freshwater fish? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Understanding how environmental variables and human disturbances influence the outcomes of introductions of non-native freshwater fish is integral to their risk management. This can be complex in freshwater ecosystems that receive subsidies that increase

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

On the Use of Transfer Entropy to Investigate the Time Horizon of Causal Influences between Signals

open access: yesEntropy, 2018
Understanding the details of the correlation between time series is an essential step on the route to assessing the causal relation between systems.

Extrusion parameters and physical transformations of an extrudate for fish: Effect of the addition of hydrolyzed protein flour from by-products of Oncorhynchus mykiss

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, 2023
IntroductionThe food industries play a fundamental role in feeding for the functions of animal metabolism. Fish feed extrusion cooking includes process-independent factors such as temperature (°C), screw speed (RPM), throughput, feed, and moisture ...

Matrix-filler interactions in a co-ground ecocomposite: surface properties and behaviour in water [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Ecocomposites made up of polystyrene and starch were produced by co-grinding. The mechanism by which the composite is formed was identified by following the particle size and morphology.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
