Childhood pemphigus foliaceus

We describe a girl who presented at the age of 12 years with a blistering eruption on the lower limbs. One week later, numerous new bullae and blisters were present. Skin biopsy for histology and immunofluorescent studies established the diagnosis of pemphigus foliaceus.

Pemphigus foliaceus (PF) and its endemic form fogo selvagem (FS) are autoimmune diseases characterized clinically by transient cutaneous superficial blisters. As opposed to pemphigus vulgaris (PV), patients lack mucosal involvement. Acantholysis in the upper epidermis is appreciated histologically.

REPORT OF CASES Case 1.— A 63-year-old woman presented with a 6-year history of extensive, crusted plaques on her face, trunk, and neck. She noted exacerbations after exposure to sunlight. A lesional biopsy specimen demonstrated a cleft containing acantholytic cells in the stratum granulosum.
