Is Pemphigus Herpetiformis an Entity?
International Journal of Dermatology, 1987ABSTRACT: Clinical, histologic, and immunofluorescence studies were performed in 15 patients with pemphigus herpetiformis. The initial diagnosis was dermatitis herpetiformis, IgA linear bullous dermatosis or bullous pemphigoid. The histology varied depending on the character of skin lesions, and showed eosinophilic spongiosis or slight acantholysis ...

Neutrophilic spongiosis in pemphigus herpetiformis
Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, 1996Pemphigus herpetiformis is a rare pemphigus variant with light microscopic features that have historically been described as either “acantholytic dermatitis herpetiformis” or as “eosinophilic spongiosis in pemphigus”. The clinical features of this form of pemphigus are reminiscent of dermatitis herpetiformis; however, the direct immunofluorescence ...

Clinically, pemphigus herpetiformis closely resembles dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring. Histologically, however, it is characterized by acantholysis and eosinophilic spongiosis. Immunohistology revealing IgG bound in the intercellular space of the epidermis enables the correct diagnosis.

A 17-year-old female patient suffered from bullous dermatitis of the oral mucosa, followed by skin lesions about one year after first manifestation of the disease. Clinical picture, histopathology, as well as immunofluorescent findings proved herpetiform pemphigus. Here we discuss the typical characteristics of the disease.

We report on the typical case of a 71-year-old male patient suffering from herpetiform dermatitis. Histological investigation and immunofluorescence revealed the characteristic features of pemphigus. The symptom disappeared after therapy with corticoids.

Pemphigus herpetiformis is an unusual variant of pemphigus. Clinically it can resemble Duhring's disease, while histopathological examination and, in particular immunofluorescence yield findings diagnostic for pemphigus. As pemphigus herpetiformis responds quite well to sulfones, recognition of this rare disorder is of practical relevance.
