Pemphigus-Like Antibodies in Dermatitis herpetiformis

Pemphigus-like antibodies were demonstrated in a patient with dermatitis herpetiformis. The patient was a 28-year-old Japanese who showed itchy tense bullae on the back, chest and shoulders. We speculate the antibodies are similar to those found in burns, drug eruptions and certain other skin diseases.

Urticaria as Presenting Manifestation of Pemphigus Herpetiformis

A patient with pemphigus herpetiformis is described. She had an urticarial itching eruption which cleared with prednisolone 50 mg/day and dapsone 150 mg/day tapering to 15 mg/day and 75 mg every other day, respectively. The possible causal relationship with aminophenazone is discussed.

Pemphigus herpetiformis is one of the less common forms of pemphigus, first introduced by Jabłońska and colleagues in 1975. This autoimmune bullous disease combines the clinical features of dermatitis herpetiformis and the immunologic characteristics of pemphigus.

Pemphigus herpetiformis is a separate form of pemphigus with its own features. Clinically it resembles dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring. Periodically there is an extraordinary violent itching. Histologically pemphigus herpetiformis shows an eosinophilic spongiosis. The important acantholysis can only be found by repeated biopsies.

Pemphigus is a rare autoimmune bullous disorder involving the skin and mucosa. The disease has a chronic course. It is characterized histologically by an intraepidermal cleavage and the production of pathogenic antibodies directed against different proteins of the desmosomes, which belong to the cadherin family.
