Pencil beam scanning: a dynamical approach to proton therapy
Proceedings IEEE International Symposium on Bio-Informatics and Biomedical Engineering, 2002Pencil Beam Scanning is a dynamic beam delivery system developed at IBA s.a. for proton therapy. The radiation field necessary to reach in a fast and robust way a prescribed 3D dose distribution is obtained by accurately controlling both the extraction of the beam from a 235 MeV accelerator and the motion of the beam spot thanks to scanning magnets ...

Investigating beam matching for multi-room pencil beam scanning proton therapy
Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine, 2020The purpose of this study was to investigate the proton beam matching for a multi-room ProteusPLUS pencil beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy system and quantify the agreement among three beam-matched treatment rooms (GTR1, GTR2, and GTR3). In-air spot size measurements were acquired using a 2D scintillation detector at various gantry angles.

Contour scanning for penumbra improvement in pencil beam scanned proton therapy
Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2017Proton therapy, especially in the form of pencil beam scanning (PBS), allows for the delivery of highly conformal dose distributions for complex tumor geometries. However, due to scattering of protons inside the patient, lateral dose gradients cannot be arbitrarily steep, which is of importance in cases with organs at risk (OARs) in close proximity to,

AUTOMATION OF PENCIL BEAM SCANNING PROTON TREATMENT PLANNING FOR INTRACRANIAL TUMOURS
Physica Medica, 2022To evaluate the feasibility of comprehensive automation of an intra-cranial proton treatment planning.Class solution (CS) beam configuration selection allows the user to identify predefined beam configuration based on target localization; automatic CS (aCS) will then explore all the possible CS beam geometries.

Pencil beam scanned protons for the treatment of patients with Ewing sarcoma
Pediatric Blood & Cancer, 2017AbstractBackgroundFew data exist regarding the clinical outcome of patients with Ewing sarcoma (EWS) treated with pencil beam scanning proton therapy (PT). We report the outcome of children, adolescents and young adults (AYA) treated with PT at the Paul Scherrer Institute.MaterialsThirty‐eight patients (median age, 9.9 years) received a median dose of ...

Scanned Carbon Pencil Beams for Tumor Therapy
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2009At GSI a fully active beam application has been developed for tumor therapy with carbon ions. In this so‐called rasterscan system the tumor volume is typically split into ∼60 slices of iso‐energies taken from a list of 252 energies ranging from ∼90–430 MeV/u (range: 1.8–30.7 cm). The energies can be combined with variable beam diameters and intensities.

Pencil Beam Scanning System Based On A Cyclotron
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2011Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (SHI) has developed a new pencil beam scanning system (PBS) for proton therapy in collaboration with National Cancer Center Hospital East (NCCHE). Taking advantage of the continuous beam from the cyclotron P235, the line scanning method is employed in order to realize continuous irradiation with high dose rate.

A metropolitan area radio system using scanning pencil beams
IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1991A metropolitan-area radio system that, from a centrally located base station, provides continuously 360 degrees coverage over a large service region is proposed. The base station blankets the service region with a raster of very narrow pencil beams that can be rapidly scanned to any position in synchronism with the switching sequences of a time ...

Proton FLASH: passive scattering or pencil beam scanning?
Physics in Medicine & Biology, 2021Abstract This study focused on a direct comparison of dose delivery efficiency between two proton FLASH delivery modes: passive scattering and pencil beam scanning (PBS). Monte-Carlo simulation of the beamline was performed using the Geant4 package. Two proton energies (63 and 230 MeV) were selected, targeting for

Development of Pencil Beam Scanning Nozzle System
2009Purpose: Several types of pencil beam scanning system for proton therapy have been developed and applied to clinical treatment. In case of pencil beam scanning using cyclotron as the proton source, it is common to use continuous scanning method. Then scanning speed and beam current are modulated simultaneously[for full text, please go to the a.m. URL]
