A Characterization of Effective Resistance Metrics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We produce a characterization of finite metric spaces which are given by the effective resistance of a graph. This characterization is applied to the more general context of resistance metrics defined by Kigami. A countably infinite resistance metric gives rise to a sequence of finite, increasing graphs with invariant effective resistance. We show that

Penicillin resistance and other predictors of mortality in pneumococcal bacteremia in a population with high human immunodeficiency virus seroprevalence.

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 1999
Rates of invasive disease caused by penicillin-resistant pneumococci are rising. Previous reports have found no association between resistant pneumococci and increased mortality.

Systematic profiling of cancer‐fibroblast interactions reveals drug combinations in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Fibroblasts, cells in the tumor environment, support ovarian cancer cell growth and alter morphology and drug response. We used fibroblast and cancer cell co‐culture models to test 528 drugs and discovered new drugs for combination treatment. We showed that adding Vorinostat or Birinapant to standard chemotherapy may improve drug response, suggesting ...

Dose‐dependent induction of epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in 3D melanoma models by non‐thermal plasma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Non‐thermal plasma treatment of melanoma cells induced epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in a dose‐dependent fashion. This report highlights the critical need to further investigate potential adverse effects of non‐thermal plasma for cancer therapy and to optimize treatment parameters for clinical translation. Despite the promising results of non‐

Penicillin-resistant pneumococci—implications for management of community-acquired pneumonia and meningitis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Penicillin-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates have become increasingly prevalent worldwide. They are well-known agents of community-acquired infections such as otitis media, pneumonia and bacterial meningitis.

Clonal Expansion of New Penicillin-Resistant Clade of Neisseria meningitidis Serogroup W Clonal Complex 11, Australia

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2017
In Western Australia, Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W clonal complex 11 became the predominant cause of invasive meningococcal disease in 2016. We used core-genome analysis to show emergence of a penicillin-resistant clade that had the penA_253 allele.

Genetics of high level penicillin resistance in clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 1995
Mosaic penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) 1A, 2X and 2B genes were cloned from four clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae with levels of susceptibility to penicillin ranging from 1.5 to 16 micrograms benzylpenicillin ml-1.
