The Relationship between SEMG and Change in Pennation Angle of Brachialis

2007 29th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2007
Surface Electromyography (SEMG) signals have been widely used for the functional assessment of muscles. On the other hand, sonography has been commonly used to detect the morphological information of human muscles in both static and dynamic conditions.

Changes in pennation angle in rotator cuff muscles with torn tendons

Journal of Orthopaedic Science, 2012
Although several authors have reported on the pennation angles of intact rotator cuff muscles, the relationship between their alteration and rotator cuff tears has not been fully clarified. The purpose of this study was to measure the pennation angles of human cadaveric rotator cuff muscles with torn tendons.Twenty embalmed cadaveric shoulders were ...

Pennation angle of the soleus in patients with unilateral Achilles tendinopathy

Disability and Rehabilitation, 2008
We measured the ultrasound scans of 23 (21 males, two females) physically active subjects (mean age: 40 years; range: 20 - 58) with unilateral Achilles tendinopathy to determine the pennation angle in the soleus muscles of the affected and non-affected limb. All scans were performed by one radiologist. The pennation angle was lower on the affected side

Muscle-fiber pennation angles are greater in hypertrophied than in normal muscles

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1993
Muscle-fiber pennation angles were measured in vivo with the use of ultrasonography to investigate the relationship between fiber pennation and muscle size for 32 male subjects (from untrained subjects to highly trained bodybuilders). From the image of a B-mode ultrasonogram, fiber pennation angles and thickness of triceps brachii were determined, the

Pennation Angle Dependency in Skeletal Muscle Tissue Doppler Strain in Dynamic Contractions

Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology, 2011
Tissue velocity imaging (TVI) is a Doppler based ultrasound technique that can be used to study regional deformation in skeletal muscle tissue. The aim of this study was to develop a biomechanical model to describe the TVI strain's dependency on the pennation angle.

A three-dimensional approach to pennation angle estimation for human skeletal muscle

Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering, 2014
Pennation angle (PA) is an important property of human skeletal muscle that plays a significant role in determining the force contribution of fascicles to skeletal movement. Two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonography is the most common approach to measure PA.

Fatigue-Induced Continuous Changes in Muscle Pennation Angle during Isometric Contraction

2010 4th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering, 2010
Muscle fatigue is an exercise-induced reduction in the maximal capacity of muscle to produce force or power output. The continuous changes of brachialis pennation angles during the fatiguing isometric contraction was investigated in this study. The muscle torque, surface electromyography (SEMG) and ultrasound image of brachialis were continuously ...

Influence of pennation angle on measurement of shear wave elastography: in vivo observation of shear wave propagation in human pennate muscle

Physiological Measurement, 2018
To examine the influence of pennation angle on measurement of shear wave elastography, this study utilised the propagation view mode that can reveal shear wave propagation in human pennate muscle in vivo. The validity of the propagation view mode was qualitatively confirmed by observation of shear wave propagation in tissue-mimicking phantoms.

Sex-related differences in motor unit firing rate and pennation angle

Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism
Motor unit firing rate (MUFR) and pennation angle were measured concurrently in males and females from submaximal to maximal intensities. Thirty participants, (16 female, 14 male) performed isometric dorsiflexion contractions at 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). During each contraction, measures of MUFR were obtained

Estimation of muscle pennation angle in ultrasound images using the beamlet transform

Journal of Shanghai University (English Edition), 2010
Ultrasound imaging has been widely used to investigate the architecture properties of skeletal muscle, including the measurement of the pennation angle. In this study, we propose a beamlet-based algorithm to detect the straight line-shaped patterns of aponeurosis, fascicle or bone, and then to quantify the pennation angle in ultrasound images.
