Response to Allopurinol and Febuxostat According to the Fractional Excretion of Urate in Men With Gout

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Body mass index (BMI), glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and pretreatment urate levels have been reported to influence the urate‐lowering response to allopurinol. We investigated whether the fractional excretion of uric acid (FEUA) also modulates this response and relates to oxypurinol concentrations.

The HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis continuum of care among women who inject drugs: A systematic review

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychiatry, 2022
IntroductionPeople who inject drugs have a substantial risk for HIV infection, especially women who inject drugs (WWID). HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a highly-effective HIV prevention drug, is uncommonly studied among WWID, and we aimed to ...

Not in the vein: 'missed hits', subcutaneous and intramuscular injections and associated harms among people who inject psychoactive drugs in Bristol, United Kingdom [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: The extent of intentional or accidental subcutaneous and intramuscular injections and the factors associated with these have rarely been studied among people who inject drugs, yet these may play an important role in the acquisition bacterial ...

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Multi‐Scale Interface Engineering of MXenes for Multifunctional Sensory Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MXenes, as two‐dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, demonstrate remarkable capabilities for multifunctional sensing applications. This review systematically examines multi‐scale interface engineering approaches that enhance sensing performance, enable diverse detection functionalities, and improve system‐level compatibility in MXene ...

Is PEPFAR Funding for Key Populations Aligned with the Epidemiologic Burden? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Key populations (KPs)—gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM); people who inject drugs (PWID), female sex workers (FSW); and transgender people (TG)—are at significantly higher risk for HIV, face a higher burden of disease, have less ...

Lysosome‐Acidifying Nanoparticles Rescue A30P α‐Synuclein Induced Neuronal Death in Cellular and Drosophila Models of Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Lysosome‐targeted acidic nanoparticles based on a biodegradable poly(ethylene tetrafluorosuccinate‐co‐succinate) copolymer are engineered to restore impaired lysosomal acidification through pH‐responsive intracellular degradation. Localized acid release enhances autophagic proteolysis, reduces α‐synuclein accumulation, and preserves dopaminergic neuron

Identifying barriers to hepatitis B and delta screening, prevention, and linkage to care among people who use drugs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

open access: yesHarm Reduction Journal
Background People who use drugs (PWUD) are at increased risk for blood-borne viruses, including hepatitis B (HBV) and delta (HDV). Despite the public health threats both viruses present, awareness remains low among at-risk communities and providers who ...

Strategies to maximise study retention and limit attrition bias in a prospective cohort study of men reporting a history of injecting drug use released from prison: the prison and transition health study

open access: yesBMC Medical Research Methodology, 2021
Background There are significant challenges associated with studies of people released from custodial settings, including loss to follow-up in the community. Interpretation of findings with consideration of differences between those followed up and those
