The paper presents a survey of the debates raised in Italy by Chaim Perelman's «Traite de l'argumentation» (1958). In Italy Perelman's theory has been mainly traced back o the contraposition between science and humanities, and has been used with antiscientific aims. At the same time, no serious analysis has been undertaken of the modes of argumentation
