Russian Wheat Aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae) Performance on Perennial Grasses

Journal of Economic Entomology, 1995
Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov), survival and fecundity on 25 perennial grasses in their 1st yr of growth was measured in greenhouse experiments. Thirteen grasses that had survived heading, seed set, and induced dormancy were tested for aphid host suitability of plants in their 2nd yr of growth.

Wheat-Perennial Triticeae Introgressions: Major Achievements and Prospects

2015
In addition to about 100 annual species, including some of the most important domesticated cereal crops, such as wheat, barley, and rye, the Triticeae tribe encompasses around 400 perennials. They comprise several species, belonging to the wheat tertiary gene pool and commonly referred to as wheatgrasses and wildryes, which, besides their utility as ...

Root traits and soil properties in harvested perennial grassland, annual wheat, and never-tilled annual wheat

Plant and Soil, 2014
Root functional traits are determinants of soil carbon storage; plant productivity; and ecosystem properties. However, few studies look at both annual and perennial roots, soil properties, and productivity in the context of field scale agricultural systems.

Perennial grass cultivars for long leys in the wheat belt of southern NSW

Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, 1967
Forty-six cultivars in eleven perennial grass species were assessed in association with subterranean clover in five trials extending over two to four growing seasons. Established stands of several phalaris and cocksfoot cultivars yielded more sown grass herbage and total herbage than Wimmera ryegrass, Australia Commercial phalaris and Currie cocksfoot.

Perennial wheat: The development of a sustainable cropping system for the U.S. Pacific Northwest

American Journal of Alternative Agriculture, 2001
AbstractPerennial wheat offers a new solution to the long-standing problems of soil erosion and degradation associated with conventional annual small-grain cropping systems in the Pacific Northwest region. Using classical breeding methods, new types of wheat have been developed that maintain the key characteristics of annual wheat, but continue to grow

Extraction of Subsoil Nitrogen by Alfalfa, Alfalfa–Wheat, and Perennial Grass Systems

Agronomy Journal, 2001
The role of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in extracting NO3–N from deep soils of areas with cold, short growing seasons, such as western Canada, is not well understood. A study was established in 1990 to determine NO3–N extraction ability to 300 cm; initial soil NO3–N concentrations were high (>8 mg kg−1).

An initial investigation of forage production and feed quality of perennial wheat derivatives

Crop & Pasture Science, 2017
Perennial cereals may offer a novel forage source in mixed farming enterprises while improving the sustainability of grain farming. There has been limited analysis of the quality of this forage type and its likely value to mixed grazing/cropping farming systems.

Evaluation of Initial Yield Perfomances of Perennial Wheat Genotypes and Their F1 Hybrids

ÇOMÜ Ziraat Fakültesi Dergisi
The rising demand for sustainable food production due to climate challenges has increased tthe interest in perennial crops as potential solutions. Perennial wheat, a hybrid derived from crossbreeding traditional wheat (Triticum spp.) and perennial species generally Thinopyrum spp., offers promising ecological benefits, including enhanced soil health ...
