Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, 335-67-1) is used in fluoropolymer production and firefighting foams and persists in the environment. Human exposure to PFOA is mostly through the diet. PFOA primarily affects the liver and can cause developmental and reproductive toxic effects in test animals.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Perfluorooctanoic Acid
2014Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an emerging persistent organic pollutant receiving increasing attention due to its global occurrence and resistance to most conventional degradation methods. Some special techniques such as ultrasonication, aqueous electron reduction, persulfate photolysis, and phosphotungstic-acid photocatalysis have been developed to ...

Degradation of Perfluorooctanoic Acid with Hydrated Electron by a Heterogeneous Catalytic System.
Environmental Science and Technology, 2021Hydrated electron (eaq-)-induced reduction protocols have bright prospects for the decomposition of recalcitrant organic pollutants. However, traditional eaq- production involves homogeneous sulfite photolysis, which has a pH-dependent reaction activity ...

Sex hormone-regulated renal transport of perfluorooctanoic acid
Chemico-Biological Interactions, 2002The biological half-life (t1/2) of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in male rats is 70 times longer than that in female rats. The difference is mainly due to the difference in renal clearance (CL(R)), which was significantly reduced by probenecid, suggesting that PFOA is excreted by organic anion transporter(s).

Laccase-Catalyzed Degradation of Perfluorooctanoic Acid
Environmental Science & Technology Letters, 2015This study examined the decomposition of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in enzyme-catalyzed oxidative humification reactions (ECOHRs). ECOHRs make up a class of reactions that are ubiquitous in the environment. Approximately 50% of PFOA in a mineral buffer solution decomposed upon addition of laccase and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole after 157 days with a ...

Central administration of perfluorooctanoic acid inhibits cutaneous inflammation
Inflammation Research, 2005To elucidate the site of action of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in the carrageenan model of peripheral inflammation.Male Sprague-Dawley rats.We first compared the anti-edema effects of systemic PFOA (50-150 mg/kg) with prototypical nonsteroidal (acetylsalicylic acid, ASA, 50-200 mg/kg) and steroidal (dexamethasone, 0.5-5.0 mg/kg) drugs after the ...

Sonochemical Decomposition of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate and Perfluorooctanoic Acid
Environmental Science & Technology, 2005Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are shown to be globally distributed, environmentally persistent, and bioaccumulative. Although the toxicities of these compounds were reported, the cleanup procedure from the environment is not developed because of their inertness.

Photo-reductive defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid in water
Water Research, 2010Globally distributed and highly stable, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has prompted much concern regarding its accumulation in the natural environment and its threats to ecosystems. Therefore, it is desirable to develop an effective treatment against PFOA pollution. In this study, a photo-reduction method is developed and evaluated for the decomposition

Perfluorooctanoic acid inhibits cell proliferation through mitochondrial damage
Toxicology in VitroGrown evidence has shown that the liver and reproductive organs were the main target organs of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Herein, we studied a toxic mechanism of PFOA using HeLa Chang liver epithelial cells. When incubated with PFOA for 24 h or 48 h, cell proliferation was inhibited in a concentration- and time-dependent fashion, but interestingly,

Adsorption behaviors of perfluorooctanoic acid on aged microplastics
Water Environment ResearchAbstractThe presence of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment poses a significant threat to ecological safety and environmental health. Widespread microplastics (MPs) have been recognized as vectors for emerging contaminants due to human activities.
