Staging the tumor and staging the host: A two centre, two country comparison of systemic inflammatory responses of patients undergoing resection of primary operable colorectal cancer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: How systemic inflammation-based prognostic scores such as the modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) and neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio (NLR) differ across populations of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unknown.

Positively Charged Polymer‐Brush MOFs for Large‐Area, Pressure‐Resistant Gas Separation Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A universal POPA strategy enables positively charged polymer‐brush MOFs with self‐adaptive interfacial interlocking to resist aggregation under fast processing. This design ensures seamless dispersion within large‐area selective layers, achieving 1 m‐wide roll‐to‐roll fabrication of pressure‐resistant MMCMs with tunable CO2 separation performance ...

Typhoid intestinal perforation: 24 Perforations in one patient

open access: yesAnnals of Medical and Health Sciences Research, 2013
Intestine perforation is one of the most dreaded and common complication of typhoid fever remarkably so in developing world; it usually leads to diffuse peritonitis, requiring early surgical intervention. Despite various measures such as safe drinking water supply and safe disposal of waste, intestinal perforation from salmonellosis remains the most ...

Elephant‐Skin‐Inspired Porous Cementitious Tiles with Programmable Crack Networks for Passive Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Elephant‐skin‐inspired crack networks are programmed in porous diatomaceous earth (DE)‐cement composites using substrate‐guided, stress‐concentration induced fracture. The resulting crack lattices act as capillary conduits that redistribute water, while the porous matrix stores moisture.

Hypervelocity impacts on thin brittle targets: experimental data and SPH simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The meteoroids and debris environment play an important role in the reduction of spacecraft life time. Ejecta or secondary debris, are produced when a debris or a meteoroid impact a spacecraft surface.

Water‐Stable Paper‐Based Laser‐Induced Graphene With Asymmetric Water Adhesion and Wettability

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Paper‐based electronics are attractive for sustainable and disposable devices, but often fail in wet environments. By introducing Parafilm into cellulose paper combined with laser conversion, two graphene surfaces with different water interactions are created.

The Level of NMDA Receptor in the Membrane Modulates Amyloid-β Association and Perforation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects mostly the elderly. The main histopathological markers are the senile plaques formed by amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) aggregates that can perforate the plasma membrane of cells, increasing the ...
