Structure of Certain Periodic Rings

Canadian Mathematical Bulletin, 1985
AbstractLet R be a periodic ring, N the set of nilpotents, and D the set of right zero divisors of R. Suppose that (i) N is commutative, and (ii) every x in R can be uniquely written in the form x = e + a, where e2 = e and a ∊ N. Then N is an ideal in R and R/N is a Boolean ring.

Defect Dragging in Periodic Structures

2007
Waves or pulses propagating along periodic structures cause thermally controlled transport of diffusing defects. The dragging waves/pulses may modulate the amplitude of the substrate as well as the geometry of the boundaries where the defects are confined.

A periodic structure mimics a metamaterial

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2007
We show that properties attributed to planar metamaterials that support resonances due to an appropriately shaped unit cell can also be identified in a medium that exhibits a resonance evoked by its period only. By choosing a subwavelength period, the effective material parameters of such a medium can be retrieved from the complex reflected and ...

Permeability relation for periodic structures

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, 1998
The permeability relation for periodic porous media is studied with respect to other petrophysical parameters such as formation factor, porosity, surface-to-volume ratio, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation time. All these quantities were computed for periodic structures of simple, body-centered, and face-centered cubic arrays of touching ...

A ‘periodic table’ for protein structures

Nature, 2002
Current structural genomics programs aim systematically to determine the structures of all proteins coded in both human and other genomes, providing a complete picture of the number and variety of protein structures that exist. In the past, estimates have been made on the basis of the incomplete sample of structures currently known.

Structures and Superstructures in Periodical Polynucleotides

1986
A renewed attention has been focused on the structural aspects of DNA in the last few years. Such revival of interest starting from the elucidation of the structure of some synthetic oligonucleotides is going beyond toward the understanding of the basic molecular mechanisms of control of genetic information, which are strictly correlated to the ...

Excitation of Rotationally Periodic Structures

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1979
A rotationally periodic structure consists of a finite number of identical substructures forming a closed ring. The vibrational behavior of such structures is considered, especially the forced response due to a rotating force. It is known that for a rotationally symmetric structure, excited by a rotating force, resonance for the n nodal diameters mode ...

Electromagnetic Scattering by Periodic Structures

Journal of Mathematical Sciences, 2004
The paper considers the existence and uniqueness problem for the stationary scattering of electromagnetic waves (diffraction) on a structure which is localized in the propagation direction of the wave, and is periodic in two other directions, taking piece-wise constant values (this corresponds to the usual structure of diffraction gratings).
