Association of Surgical Ward Nurse Staffing With Postoperative Mortality and Failure to Rescue

ANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
In this national cohort study of adults undergoing inpatient surgery in Aotearoa New Zealand, lower surgical ward nurse staffing was associated with higher odds of postoperative complications, failure to rescue, and mortality. These findings suggest that ward staffing is an important and potentially modifiable component of postoperative care.

Cost‐Effectiveness of Laparoscopic Common Bile Duct Exploration Versus Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography in Emergency Stone Management

ANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Among 337 patients undergoing emergency management of common bile duct stones, laparoscopic common bile duct exploration was associated with lower healthcare costs, fewer procedures and shorter hospital stays than ERCP‐based management, supporting single‐stage surgical management as a safe and cost‐effective treatment strategy.

The preoperative Multi‐Domain Risk Stratification model effectively stratified operative risk in older adults undergoing cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis, predicting prolonged hospital stay, medical complications, and Medical Emergency Team calls, supporting its role in comprehensive preoperative risk assessment and perioperative decision‐making.
