Prediction of periphyton in rivers

open access: yes, 2013
Periphyton communities are often the dominant primary producers and an important energy source to higher trophic levels in rivers and streams. Empirical models of periphyton biomass (chlorophyll a) that have high predictive power are generally lacking. The goal of this research was to assess and improve the predictability of periphyton in rivers.

Occurrence and potential harms of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in environment and their removal by periphyton

Critical reviews in environmental science and technology, 2023
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been widely used around the world due to their high-efficiency and broad-spectrum insecticidal effects. However, they pose a severe threat to ecosystems and human health due to their easy bioaccumulation and high ...

Bacteria and microalgae associations in periphyton - mechanisms and biotechnological opportunities.

FEMS Microbiology Reviews, 2023
Phototrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms coexist in complex and dynamic structures called periphyton. These structures shape the biogeochemistry and biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems.

Periphyton improves soil conditions and offers a suitable environment for rice growth in coastal saline alkali soil

Land Degradation and Development, 2021
Periphyton plays an indispensable role in coastal saline‐alkali land, but its function is poorly understood. Soil physical and chemical properties (pH value, salinity, soil organic matter), enzyme activity, and microbial diversity (based on 16 s rDNA ...

Paddy periphyton reduced cadmium accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa) by removing and immobilizing cadmium from the water-soil interface.

Environmental Pollution, 2020
Periphyton plays a significant role in heavy metal transfer in wetlands, but its contribution to cadmium (Cd) bioavailability in paddy fields remains largely unexplored.

Periphyton enhances arsenic release and methylation at the soil-water interface of paddy soils.

Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2020
Periphyton is ubiquitous in rice paddy fields, however its role in paddy soil arsenic (As) biogeochemistry remains unexplored. In this study, microcosm incubations and extensive field sampling were used to better understand the roles of periphyton on As ...

Using δ15N of periphyton and fish to evaluate spatial and seasonal variation of anthropogenic nitrogen inputs in a polluted Brazilian river basin

, 2020
Nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ15N) of aquatic organisms have been used widely as indicators of the intensity of anthropogenic N loading into watersheds; nevertheless, this approach has rarely been applied in the Neotropics.

Periphyton has the potential to increase phosphorus use efficiency in paddy fields.

Science of the Total Environment, 2020
The phosphorus (P) supply is mismatched with rice demand in the early and late stages of rice growth, which primarily results in low P use efficiency and high environmental risk.
