Periphyton and aquatic production: an introduction.

2005
AbstractPeriphyton community comprises bacteria, fungi, protozoa, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic organisms, organic detritus and a range of other invertebrates and their larvae. This introductory paper discusses the contribution of periphyton to aquatic productivity and the status of world aquaculture in terms of culture systems, production and ...

Reaction of Lotic Periphyton to Experimental Acidification

Water, Air, and Soil Pollution, 1986
Two hypotheses that could explain increases in the biomass and production of lotic periphytic communities in acidified habitats were tested: 1) a greater bioavailability of P due to its greater release from sediments at low pH, and 2) utilization of S from the H2SO4 addition.

Periphyton dynamics and influencing factors.

2005
AbstractBiomass and productivity of periphyton communities vary greatly over short distances and time spans, because constituent taxa can respond rapidly to changes in biotic and abiotic factors through colonization from the surrounding water and through growth.

Environmental characterization of periphyton community

Journal of Ocean University of China, 2006
The present paper deals with the behavior of the Attached Microbial Community (AMC) for water self-purification at different riverbeds in a typical local river. The study quantitatively investigated the problem starting with in-situ sampling. It was found that more biomass of AMC was at riffles with wider distribution than in pools.

Periphyton in a Stabilization System

Acta hydrochimica et hydrobiologica, 1990
AbstractPeriphyton consisting of decomposers, producers and consumers proved to be an excellent indicator of the water quality in the course of selfpurification of dairy wastes in a stabilization system consisting of 3 reservoirs in Dvorec near Nepomuk.

Primary Productivity of Periphyton

Nature, 1963
THE difficult problem of assaying biomass and rates of colonization by periphyton in fresh and saline waters has been recognized for many years. The most common method used in these investigations has involved the measurement of rates of colonization by periphyton on artificial substrata.

Periphyton Measurements and Applications

1979
Evaluation of attached microcommunities, that is, periphyton or Aufwuchs, provides an accurate, reliable indicator of water quality. These microcommunities have an important role as primary producers in many aquatic systems, particularly in lotic environments.

Periphyton structure, diversity and colonization.

2005
AbstractThe morphological characteristics, biochemical composition, taxonomic composition and diversity, as well as the colonization process and sloughing and recolonization of periphyton are reviewed. The proximate composition of periphyton grown on different substrates in different habitats, and a list of some periphyton taxa in different habitats (i.
