Folding and aggregation of beta-lactamase in the periplasmic space of Escherichia coli.

open access: hybridJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1990
High level expression of TEM beta-lactamase results in the accumulation of precursor and mature protein in the insoluble fraction of Escherichia coli. The mature polypeptide is sequestered in protein aggregates (inclusion bodies) located within the periplasmic space whereas the insoluble precursor is present in the cytoplasm.

Protein folding in the periplasm in the absence of primary oxidant DsbA: modulation of redox potential in periplasmic space via OmpL porin [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe EMBO Journal, 2004
Disulfide bond formation in Escherichia coli is a catalyzed reaction accomplished by DsbA. We found that null mutations in a new porin gene, ompL, allowed a total bypass of the DsbA requirement for protein oxidation. These mutations acted as extragenic null suppressors for dsbA, and restored normal folding of alkaline phosphatase and relieved ...

Probing the mechanism of peptidoglycan amidase activation by FtsEX-EnvC [PDF]

open access: yesmBio
The FtsEX-EnvC-AmiA/B system is a key component of the E. coli cell division machinery that directs breakage of the peptidoglycan layer during separation of daughter cells.

.BETA.-Glucosidase and .BETA.-galactosidase from the periplasmic space of Rhizobium trifolii cells.

open access: bronzeThe Journal of General and Applied Microbiology, 1982
High amounts of β-glucosidase (MW 74, 000) and β-galactosidase (MW 122, 000) were isolated from the periplasmic space of Rhizobium trifolii 4S (infectious strain), compared with the cell homogenate. The characterization of β-glucosidase and β-galactosidase was determined.

Donnan Potential across the Outer Membrane of Gram-Negative Bacteria and Its Effect on the Permeability of Antibiotics

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2021
The cell envelope structure of Gram-negative bacteria is unique, composed of two lipid bilayer membranes and an aqueous periplasmic space sandwiched in between.
