The Early Evolution of the Perissodactyla [PDF]
Perissodactyls arose from phenacodontid condylarths in the late Paleocene, in a major adaptive shift involving two functional complexes: specialization of the limbs for running, including a radical remodelling of the ankle joint that restricted lateral movement, and a change in molar cusp pattern and jaw musculature that increased transverse shear ...

Why ruminating ungulates chew sloppily: Biomechanics discern a phylogenetic pattern.
There is considerable debate regarding whether mandibular morphology in ungulates primarily reflects phylogenetic affinities or adaptation to specific diet.

Foot pressure distribution in White Rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) during walking [PDF]
White rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) are odd-toed ungulates that belong to the group Perissodactyla. Being second only to elephants in terms of large body mass amongst extant tetrapods, rhinoceroses make fascinating subjects for the study of how ...

Bite-DNA Shows Substantial Browsing on Willows (<i>Salix</i> spp.) by North American Bison in Yellowstone National Park. [PDF]
Riparian willows in Yellowstone National Park are shaped by ungulate browsing, but species‐specific contributions remain unclear. Using bite‐DNA metabarcoding of browsed willow twigs across six northern range sites, we found that American bison were the most frequent browsers, exceeding elk and often mule deer.

New material of Epiaceratherium and a new species of Mesaceratherium clear up the phylogeny of early Rhinocerotidae (Perissodactyla) [PDF]
Reduction of the anterior dentition (i.e. incisors and canines) is a major adaptative trait of the Rhinocerotidae among Perissodactyla. However, the corresponding evolutionary sequence was lacking a robust phylogenetic frame to support it thus far. Here,
