Species traits mediate the abundant‐center patterns in ground‐dwelling mammal and bird species in China

The abundance center hypothesis (ACH) posits that species abundance peaks at distribution centers; however, empirical support remains inconsistent. This study tested the generality of the ACH and investigated species traits as mediators of abundance–distance relationships.

Herbivores showed higher alpha diversity than carnivores/omnivores, while omnivores had the highest beta diversity. Host phylogeny influenced gut microbiota more strongly in herbivores/omnivores, with phylogenetic distance correlating to microbiota dissimilarity.

Comparative functional morphological study of the tarsal joint mobility in artiodactyls and perissodactyls in light of astragalar morphological differences

This study investigated how variations in the shape of the astragalus affect tarsal joint behavior, using CT scans. In artiodactyls with a double‐pulley astragalus, the calcaneus shifted plantarly during plantarflexion. This suggests the movement increases hindlimb functional length and contributes to enhanced running speed.
