Familiarity with the pathophysiology of peritoneal disease is the basis of successful ultrasound (US) study of the peritoneum. The pouch of Douglas, diaphragmatic surfaces, the paracolic gutters, and the regions of the mesentery and omentum should receive careful scrutiny in the patient at risk for a peritoneal disease process.

The aetiology of ascites may be obvious from the history and physical examination. However, it is generally necessary to examine the fluid microscopically, chemically and bacteriologically. Even when the cause is clinically apparent, for example hepatic cirrhosis and portal hypertension, it may not be possible to exclude either superimposed infection ...

Psammomacarcinoma of the peritoneum
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, 2001Psammomacarcinoma is a rare histologic subtype of serous carcinoma originating in the ovary or peritoneum, characterized by massive psammoma body formation, invasiveness, and low-grade differentiation. Its clinical behavior appears similar to that of serous borderline tumors rather than that of typical invasive serous carcinomas.

To the Editor.— Regarding the answers by Goldenberg (240:1904, 1978) to the predisposing factors to formation of an incisional hernia, I would agree with all but one of his points. He implies that breaking of a peritoneal closure suture would be a predisposing factor and, therefore, by implication, that closing the peritoneum must be good.

Psammocarcinoma of the peritoneum
Diagnostic Cytopathology, 1994AbstractThe cytologic and histologic features of two cases of psammocarcinoma of the peritoneum are reported. The previously proposed histologic diagnostic criteria for this tumor are expanded in order to accommodate the present two cases. The cytologic features of this tumor have not previously been reported. © 1994 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

The author describes two educational strategies for helping students to understand the complex three-dimensional structure of the peritoneal cavity and the developmental changes by which that structure arises. The first strategy consists of a series of conducted circular tours round the peritoneal lining of the postnatal abdomen.
