Peritoneal fibrinolytic activity in peritonitis
The American Journal of Surgery, 2002Peritonitis may cause a reduction in abdominal fibrinolytic activity. The reduced local fibrinolysis seems to be an important process in the subsequent development of adhesion formation. The aim of the study was to evaluate peritoneal fibrinolytic capacity in inflamed and normal peritoneum.Peritoneal biopsy specimens were taken at the beginning of ...

Peritoneal Fluid Analysis in Peritoneal Dialysis–Associated Peritonitis
JAMA, 2022A 62-year-old woman undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) presented to the clinic with severe abdominal pain and cloudy PD fluid. Seven days prior, she inadvertently broke aseptic technique when tightening a leaking connection of her PD catheter tubing. Cloudy fluid that was drained from her PD catheter was sent for laboratory analysis. What would you do

Clinics in Geriatric Medicine, 1992
Intraperitoneal infections or inflammatory disease in elderly patients are a diagnostic challenge that will be encountered with increasing frequency in the aging population of the United States. Diagnostic clues are not overt and frequently appear late in the course of the disease.

In VitroAnalysis of Peritoneal Adhesions in Peritonitis
Journal of Surgical Research, 1996Peritoneal adhesions due to peritonitis make surgery more difficult and may cause complications. Clarifying the formation mechanism of peritoneal adhesions could help identify methods useful for their prevention. We cultured mesothelial monolayers on plates and microcarriers to simulate the parietal and visceral peritoneum, respectively.

Tuberculous Peritonitis Simulating Peritoneal Carcinosis
Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 1982Abstract. Two cases are reported exemplifying the difficulties faced in the clinical diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis. Two fertile‐aged nulliparous females were admitted with symptoms and signs of an acute abdomen. Both showed a relative intenstinal obstruction, abdominal mass and ascitic fluid. A malignant disease was suspected and laparotomy was

Fungal peritonitis in children on peritoneal dialysis
Pediatric Nephrology, 2007Fungal peritonitis is a rare but serious complication in children on peritoneal dialysis (PD). In this study, risk factors were evaluated, and therapeutic measures were reviewed. A retrospective, multi-centre study was performed in 159 Dutch paediatric PD patients, between 1980 and 2005 (3,573 months). All peritonitis episodes were reviewed.

Surgical Management of Peritoneal Dialysis Peritonitis: The Impact of Peritoneal Sclerosis
World Journal of Surgery, 2009AbstractBackgroundPeritonitis is a life‐threatening complication of peritoneal dialysis. Peritoneal sclerosis is associated with long‐term peritoneal dialysis. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of peritoneal sclerosis on outcomes following laparotomy for peritoneal dialysis peritonitis.MethodsA series of 63 consecutive patients underwent ...

Longitudinal changes in peritoneal kinetics: the effects of peritoneal dialysis and peritonitis
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, 1996Peritoneal infection and poor ultrafiltration continue to be the major causes of treatment failure in CAPD. The combined effects of peritonitis and the continuous exposure to dialysis fluid remain the most likely candidates affecting the peritoneum in the long term.

Peritoneal defence in peritoneal dialysis
Nephrology, 1996Summary: Over the past 20 years the use of peritoneal dialysis as a renal replacement therapy has increased dramatically. Its use has identified that infection and long‐term loss of function of the peritoneal membrane as a dialysing organ are the major problems associated with this form of therapy.
