Approximating the Permanent [PDF]
A randomised approximation scheme for the permanent of a 0–1s presented. The task of estimating a permanent is reduced to that of almost uniformly generating perfect matchings in a graph; the latter is accomplished by simulating a Markov chain whose states are the matchings in the graph.

AbstractTemporal nihilism is the view that our lives will not matter after we die. According to the standard interpretation, this is because our lives will not make a permanent difference. Many who consider the view thus reject it by denying that our lives need to have an eternal impact.

The training of physicians in the past century was based primarily on responsibility and the chain-of-command. Those with the bulk of that responsibility in the fields of pediatrics and internal medicine were residents. Residents trained the medical students and supervised them carefully in caring for patients.

Let A = (aij) be an m × n matrix and let K = {s1, …, sk} be a k-subset from {1, 2, …, n}. For 0≤t≤k≤n define the (t, K)-permanent of A to be(1)the summation taken over all m-tuples (i1, i2, …, im) (repetitions allowed) of 1, 2, …, n each containing exactly t distinct entries from K and any number of distinct entries from the remaining n-k integers. Evaluation of Permanents [PDF]
The permanent of an m x n matrix A = (aij),m≤n, is defined bywhere the summation is over all one-to-one functions σ from {1, … ,m} to { 1, …,n}. In other words, the permanent of A is the sum of all thediagonal productsofA, that is, all the products ofmentries ofAno two of which lie in the same row or in the same column.

Louis I. Kahn fascinate us all with his passion for Mediterranean culture. Precisely at the moment when the center of the dominant culture moved from Europe to North America, he was able to immerse himself in the Roman brick structures of the great classical buildings, interpreting the timeless forms of antiquity.
