Greater Cochlear Damage in Otogenic Versus Meningogenic Meningitis: Hearing Rehabilitation Implications

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Otogenic route of meningitis was associated with greater cochlear hair cell loss in comparison with the meningogenic one in this otopathology study. Neuronal depletion has been traditionally implicated in failed hearing rehabilitation of post‐meningitis deafness.

Persistent Methicillin-Susceptible Bacteremia Rapidly Cleared with Cefazolin and Ertapenem Combination Therapy in a Patient with COVID-19

open access: yesCase Reports in Infectious Diseases, 2022
Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bloodstream infections (BSIs) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. MSSA BSIs can rapidly disseminate, resulting in deep-seated infections, prolonged durations of bacteremia, and ...

Comparison of Tacrolimus and Infliximab for Acute Severe Ulcerative Colitis in Hospitalized Adults: A Retrospective Study

open access: yesJournal of Digestive Diseases, EarlyView.
Colectomy‐free clinical response rates at discharge and at 1‐year follow‐up were comparable in patients with acute severe ulcerative colitis treated with infliximab or tacrolimus as salvage therapies, as shown in this retrospective study. The safety profile was comparable between groups, although the length of hospitalization was longer among ...

Septic thrombophlebitis with persistent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia and de novo resistance to vancomycin and daptomycin

open access: yesInfectious Disease Reports, 2017
Persistent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia is associated with significant risk of mortality, especially when it occurs while on appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Early predictors of cognitive trajectories from birth to adolescence in children born extremely preterm

open access: yesDevelopmental Medicine &Child Neurology, EarlyView.
At 2 years, 10 years, and 15 years, the presence of early white matter injury (WMI) moderated associations between lower social risk and cognitive functioning in the social disadvantage index group x WMI interactions for combined abilities. Findings suggest that the benefits of low social risk were present in those without early WMI, but are ...

Clinical and microbiological characteristics of persistent Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, risk factors for mortality, and the role of CD4+ T cells

open access: yesScientific Reports
This study evaluated the determinants of mortality and the T cell immune response in patients with persistent Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB). This was a prospective cohort study and patients with confirmed SAB were enrolled from 2008 to 2020.

Post‐Transplant Bendamustine as a Platform for Immune Modulation After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Post‐transplant cyclophosphamide (PT‐CY) remains the standard of care for graft‐versus‐host disease (GvHD) prophylaxis in haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), yet relapse, delayed immune reconstitution, infections, and organ toxicity represent persistent and clinically meaningful limitations.

Short versus long duration of ceftaroline combination therapy and outcomes in persistent or high-grade MRSA bacteremia: A retrospective single-center study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
BackgroundMethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is associated with high mortality rates. Despite antibiotic therapy, persistent bacteremia is challenging to treat.

Methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections in the Northern Territory of Australia 2017–2022

open access: yesInternal Medicine Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections (BSIs) cause significant morbidity and mortality. In Australia's Northern Territory (NT), MRSA BSI prevalence is disproportionately high. Vancomycin remains standard therapy despite toxicity and complex monitoring requirements.

Comparing clinical manifestations, treatment strategies and outcomes of Staphylococcus lugdunensis bacteraemia versus Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia – a retrospective cohort study

open access: yesInternal Medicine Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase‐negative Staphylococcus that has been increasingly recognised as a significant pathogen capable of causing invasive infections similar to Staphylococcus aureus. Data comparing the clinical manifestations and outcomes of S. lugdunensis bacteraemia to S. aureus bacteraemia remain limited. This
