Endophytic Bacteria In The Phytodegradation Of Persistent Organic Pollutants

open access: yesPostępy Mikrobiologii, 2019
Organic pollutants are released into the environment as a result of various human activities. Traditional physical and chemical methods for the clean-up of contaminated soil and water are often costly and invasive. A good alternative to the above methods

Herbicide accumulation and evolution in reservoir sediments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The aim of the present study was to understand the effect of reservoir configurations on sediment pesticide fate. Two dams were selected on the River Garonne, in southwest France: Carbonne and Golfech, both with reservoirs subject to accumulation of ...

Paving the Way to Elucidate Hg's Role in Tumorigenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tumorigenesis can result from diverse environmental carcinogens. Among them, mercury—a lifelong bioaccumulative Group 2B carcinogen—has tumorigenic potential that remains poorly understood due to confounding co‐exposures and limited organ‐specific data.

Diversity of Pharmaceuticals Enhances Antibiotic Resistance in the Invertebrate Gut via Biofilm‐Mediated Mechanisms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Pharmaceutical diversity acts as an independent driver of antibiotic resistance in soil invertebrates. While bulk soil remains unaffected, the collembolan gut microbiome exhibits significant resistance gene enrichment under complex chemical exposure and diurnal warming.

Persistent organic pollutants and pregnancy complications

open access: yesScience of The Total Environment, 2016
We sought to investigate the relationship between maternal preconception exposures to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and pregnancy complications, gestational diabetes (GDM) and gestational hypertension. Data from 258 (51%) women with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) confirmed pregnancies reaching ≥24weeks gestation, from a prospective cohort of

Molecular biomarkers and toxic consequences of impact by organic pollution in aquatic organisms [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Organic contaminants are readily bioaccumulated by aquatic organisms. Exposure to and toxic effects of contaminants can be measured in terms of the biochemical responses of the organisms (i.e. molecular biomarkers).

Exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls and hexachlorobenzene, semen quality and testicular cancer risk [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
PURPOSE: We carried out a case-control study to investigate the possible role of occupational and environmental exposure to endocrine disruptors in the onset of testicular cancer (TC). METHODS: We evaluated 125 TC patients and 103 controls.

Bioenergy Cropping Reduces the Spatiotemporal Scaling of Soil Bacterial Biodiversity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Consistent with patterns observed in plant and animal communities, soil bacterial communities exhibit significant species–time–area and phylogenetic–time–area relationships independent of nested structure. Bioenergy cropping significantly reduces the spatiotemporal scaling rates, particularly in sandy loam soils.

Hybrid Advanced Oxidation Processes Involving Ultrasound: An Overview

open access: yesMolecules, 2019
Sonochemical oxidation of organic pollutants in an aqueous environment is considered to be a green process. This mode of degradation of organic pollutants in an aqueous environment is considered to render reputable outcomes in terms of minimal chemical ...

Climate Action Impacts on Steelmaking Emissions of Persistent Organic Pollutants Highlight a Gap Between the Paris Agreement and the Stockholm Convention

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Emissions of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UPOPs) and global warming are two major environmental challenges. But their governance has largely evolved in parallel, leaving the toxicity implications of climate‐driven industrial transitions poorly understood.
